Five Bets, Just Me And A Gut Feeling
I want to be upfront about something before I get into these. I didn’t run any of these through my own system first. These are pure feel, years of watching and loving this sport, and I think that’s worth saying out loud instead of pretending every pick comes from a spreadsheet. Here’s all five, and why I actually believe in them.
Syracuse -3 (-113): Healthy Is A Different Team Than Hurt
People forget how good Syracuse actually looked when Steve Angeli was healthy last year. I didn’t forget. In his four starts before he went down, Syracuse was 3-1 and scored 25-plus points every single game. The second he tore his Achilles, it fell apart completely, 0-8 the rest of the way, never cracking 18 points with the backups running the show. That’s not a small difference. That’s a whole different team.
Now factor in what Cal’s walking into. Cross-country trip, first-time head coach, and I already saw signs in his opener that he’s still figuring some things out. New York in September isn’t an easy building to play in as it is, let alone coming off a flight like that under a coach who’s still learning on the job. Fran Brown’s had two years to build this thing, and he’s got a healthy quarterback finally back under center. I like where this lines up.
Illinois -5.5 (-107): Two Ways I Win This One
Duke had Darian Mensah last year when these two played. They don’t have him now, he’s at Miami, and I watched enough of Duke’s offense last week to know it looked genuinely shaky without him. So here’s how I see this game going one of two ways. Either I hit on Illinois laying the number, or this turns into a slow, grinding game that stays under the total. Both of these coaches have a real history of games like this playing under. I might end up taking a piece of that action too, honestly, I haven’t fully closed the book on it. But right now I’m taking the bait on Illinois.
Army 1H -1.5 (-112): Why Triple Option Teams Are Different
I bet triple option teams, and I’ll tell you exactly why. You cannot walk into a game against an option offense without real, specific preparation, or it turns into a long, long day for your defense. Doesn’t matter how talented you are. It’s a totally different discipline than anything else in college football.
Yeah, Bryson Daily’s gone. But this Hellums kid isn’t some drop-off, he ran for over 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, second-most in Army history behind only Daily’s own record. He knows exactly what he’s doing back there.
South Florida is walking in with a brand new team. They have to mesh as a unit, and they have not seen a live triple option look together yet as this specific group. Maybe they make real halftime adjustments and figure it out. Maybe they don’t. I like Army controlling the ball and the tempo in that first half specifically, before any adjustments can even happen. I like the full game number too, but the first half is where I feel the strongest, and here’s the other piece that pushed me all the way to making this bet. Army was a legitimately good team last year, and they do not recruit through the portal. That roster continuity, everybody already knowing the system inside and out while USF is still learning each other, that’s a real, tangible edge in a game like this.
Utah -13 (-105): I Need Someone To Show Me Something From Arkansas
I’ll be straight, Arkansas hasn’t shown me anything that makes me nervous about this number. New coach, a roster that turned over almost entirely, and a quarterback battle that still isn’t settled. I don’t think this is a team with real answers yet, and I don’t think I’m the only one who feels that way, even their own people have said flat out that nobody can really grade this offense until this exact game happens.
Utah’s the opposite story. Devon Dampier is healthy and I think he’s got something to prove. That offensive line is full of guys built to impose their will up front. Two touchdowns to cover against a team still trying to figure out who they are feels very gettable to me.
Kentucky Over 19.5 Team Total (-110)
I looked into why this Kentucky team is actually different, and it’s not close. Mark Stoops is gone, fired after going 5-7. In his place is Will Stein, who ran the single most efficient offense in the entire country as Oregon’s offensive coordinator the last three years, real, measured numbers, not reputation. His new offensive coordinator, Joe Sloan, had Garrett Nussmeier throwing for over 4,000 yards back in 2024. Every quarterback that’s run Stein’s system has put up real numbers. That’s the actual reason he got hired.
The offensive line got rebuilt too, not patched. Four new transfer starters, including the No. 5 ranked center in the entire country according to PFF. That’s real, serious talent up front, not a hope-and-pray situation.
Yeah, the quarterback’s a question mark, Kenny Minchey’s got all of 32 career dropbacks. But he’s stepping into a proven system, behind a real offensive line, with a coach who’s had every single quarterback he’s touched put up real production. I’m not betting on Kentucky’s defense to hold up against Alabama. I’m betting Stein’s offense gets its own points on the board regardless of what the other side of the ball does. I’m not trusting Alabama’s defense to hold this offense under 20, and after digging into what’s actually different here, I don’t think I should.
Good Luck!! And, if you’re riding with me on any of these, I hope it works out for both of us.
