Live line: Over 59.5, -118.
Our system doesn’t carry a real totals model yet, so this one leans harder on the actual football than the other three. Worth saying plainly instead of pretending there’s a number behind this that isn’t there.
The Real Caution On Texas’s Side, Not Just The Good News
Gotta be honest about last year first. Texas’s offense finished 80th nationally in scoring, 26.7 points a game, a real letdown given the talent on that roster. And the specific game worth knowing about is their actual season opener last year, against Ohio State. Texas scored seven points. Total. Sarkisian openly played it conservative that day, didn’t trust a first year starting Manning against that level of defense, and it showed.
That matters here because this is also a season opener. Not against Ohio State, Texas State’s an entirely different animal, but it’s worth knowing Texas has a real, recent history of coming out flat and cautious in openers rather than assuming a track meet by default.
The Real Case For Points Anyway
Here’s the part that actually favors the over, and it’s specific, not just hope. Texas was dramatically more explosive at home last year than on the road, close to 11 points in the first quarter alone at home compared to under 2 on the road or at neutral sites. This game is in Austin. That splits directly in favor of a fast start, the exact opposite of what happened at Ohio State, which was on the road.
2026 also brings real, new answers on offense, and not just through the air. Last year Texas had the fewest rush attempts per game of the entire Sarkisian era, a real, documented weakness on that side of the ball. This offseason Texas lost its top four running backs to the portal and rebuilt the room from scratch with two proven veterans, Hollywood Smothers in from NC State (939 yards, 6 touchdowns, First-team All-ACC last year) and Raleek Brown in from Arizona State (1,141 yards, All-Big 12 first team). Both are expected to compete for real early season carries in this exact game. Add Cam Coleman in from Auburn, Ryan Wingo back, Emmett Mosley over from Stanford, and one outlet covering the offense specifically said this group has the ceiling for 40 plus points a game if Manning plays like he’s supposed to. That’s not empty hype, that’s a real, current read on real personnel additions at every level of the offense, not just last year’s disappointing numbers repeating themselves.
Don’t Sleep On Texas State’s Side Of This Total
Brad Jackson isn’t walking in overmatched and hoping to hang around. Bowl MVP this past January, a five touchdown, 393 total yard game against South Alabama in the regular season, the kind of quarterback who can put points on the board even in a loss. If Texas’s defense has any early jitters of its own, or if backups get run out there once the game’s decided, Jackson’s a real enough player to add points late that a lot of overmatched Group of Five quarterbacks wouldn’t.
Which loops back to my read on this one. If Texas comes out and plays the full game because Ohio State’s still a week away and they’re not resting anybody yet, both offenses probably score enough to get there on their own. If Texas jumps out big and starts pulling starters with the Ohio State game looming, Jackson’s exactly the kind of quarterback who scores against backups in the second half rather than just running clock. Either version of how this game goes tends to end up somewhere north of 60.
Bottom Line
No system number to lean on here, this one’s built entirely on real football. The home split favors points. The new weapons favor points. Jackson gives Texas State a real second half puncher’s chance even in a lopsided game. The one honest caution is Texas’s actual recent history of playing tight and conservative in openers, which is real and shouldn’t get ignored just because the story elsewhere is good.
