Then, with Ole Miss still playoff-bound, he left. Mid-run. He didn’t coach the Rebels in the CFP at all; Ole Miss promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to head coach and moved on without him.

It didn’t happen cleanly. Kiffin reportedly wanted to coach Ole Miss through the playoff even after deciding to take the LSU job, which dragged the situation out and created real tension with Ole Miss’s administration — tension he’s since said he regrets prolonging. Most of his offensive staff followed him to Baton Rouge, but stayed on to finish the season with Ole Miss first, a genuinely awkward arrangement for everyone involved. On LSU’s side, the opening wasn’t quiet either: the school had fired Brian Kelly in October, absorbing a $54 million buyout, and a real athletic department shake-up followed — one driven, by multiple accounts, by Louisiana’s own governor and his appointees on LSU’s board, forcing out the athletic director in the process.

One thing worth being precise about: the actual Kiffin-versus-his-old-team grudge match is Week 3, in Oxford, not this game. What Saturday actually is: his first game as LSU’s head coach, full stop — and given everything above, that’s plenty on its own. ESPN College GameDay will be in Baton Rouge for it. Two Talented, Disappointed Teams Looking for a Reset

Both programs are trying to shake off nearly identical letdowns. Clemson’s lost a genuine piece of its 2026 recruiting class already — safety Polo Anderson, their second-highest-rated signee and a player Dabo Swinney expected to be a real contributor, is out for the season with a knee injury suffered on special teams. Leading returning receiver TJ Moore (52 catches, 837 yards last season) was banged up early in camp but the staff expects him ready for the opener. Wide receiver Vernell Brown III is dealing with a day-to-day foot issue after being stepped on in practice.

Where This Actually Lines Up

This is a genuinely hard one to have real conviction on, and our system says so honestly rather than pretending otherwise — a near-even model number against a market that’s much more confident in LSU, in a game with a first-time head coach, a real quarterback question mark on the road, and two teams both trying to prove last year was the exception, not the pattern. The atmosphere alone — GameDay in town, a fanbase that greeted Kiffin’s arrival with a police-escorted procession through the city back in December — is going to be a real factor in a way that’s genuinely hard to model.
